Story About Friends
2018
Story About Friends is the continuation of my series Story About Gnomes, where I made self-portraits and portraits of my niece when she was three years old. For Story About Friends I worked in collaboration with my niece in her tenth birthday. During family reunions we created photographs in which both appeared in the frame and decided the costumes, the action and the place, improvising ambiguous narratives about friendship.
I was motivated to document her growth, especially the moment in which her body reached and passed my own scale, an age where my own body stopped growing. These two friends make a world of relations and contrasts by juxtaposing their bodies of different gender. In the images I generate a visual illusion where the limits between childhood and adulthood begin to dispel, by altering the rules of conventional photography. A boundary that also blurs when the adult enters into the child's world, and the child commits with an adult's project.
The images explore ideas related to duality, transformation and transition, from a point of view where both physiques on the surface look similar. Nevertheless, when you look at them closely both of the figures are essentially different.
